Viedoc would like to recognize this important day — the International Day of People With Disabilities, Thursday, December 3rd. According to the WHO World Report on Disability, 15 percent of the world's population, or more than 1 billion people, live with disability. The world over, many of these people struggle with the stigma of disabilities on a daily basis. This day is to create understanding and support for the dignity and respect they deserve.
While clinical research continually strives to better humanity, it is important to recognize that much can be done within our discipline. Today people with disabilities (PWD) are largely absent from mainstream health research despite their needs being overrepresented in healthcare. Notwithstanding slight trends toward increased inclusion of minority groups in research, PWD continue to be largely underrepresented in health research. At the same time, PWD are one of the greatest potential beneficiaries of health care services. December 3rd is dedicated to raising awareness of the many toils PWD face. For more information on the inclusion of people with disabilities in clinical research and outcome studies, please read this article.
There are also thousands of people working in healthcare with disabilities today. And for these, access is often a challenge to be overcome. While Viedoc cannot change the world by itself, we believe in respect, dignity, and the accessibility of computer systems to all, regardless of disability. Join us in trying to help make the world a better place.
